The NVQ Level 2 in Bricklaying (Trowel Occupations) is a competency-based qualification for those who work in the construction industry. The qualification is used to prove that you are competent in your current occupation.

This course will provide you with an introduction to working in the construction industry with core units on health and safety and communication within construction trades followed by hands on practical training in building block, brick and cavity walls. It is ideal for beginners to bricklaying and those that have some DIY experience and wish to develop their skills further. It is also ideal for multitrade skills people including landscape gardeners and those who may need to work with brickwork and build brick walls.

If you have prior construction experience you may opt to do the level one certificate in one week.

You will cover:

  • Knowledge of bricks and blocks (and mixes, mortar and bonds) and how to lay them properly, including building a variety of low walls, with 90 degree corners and two brick pillars
  • Understanding of how to select and maintain tools including gauge, plumb line, and level and how to use them safely and effectively
  • Health and Safety issues
  • Marking out - chalk lines and mortar lines
  • Simple foundations
  • Toothing technique.

Our two week course which can also be accessed as funded if you are 19+ and claiming state benefits will provide you with an introduction to working in the construction industry with core units on health and safety and communication within construction trades followed by hands on practical training in building block, brick and cavity walls. It is ideal for beginners to bricklaying and those that have some DIY experience and wish to develop their skills further. It is also ideal for multitrade skills people including landscape gardeners and those who may need to work with brickwork and build brick walls.

You may opt to do the level one certificate; no entry requirements or prior expeience in necssary.

You will cover:

  • Knowledge of bricks and blocks (and mixes, mortar and bonds) and how to lay them properly, including building a variety of low walls, with 90 degree corners and two brick pillars
  • Understanding of how to select and maintain tools including gauge, plumb line, and level and how to use them safely and effectively
  • Health and Safety issues
  • Marking out - chalk lines and mortar lines
  • Simple foundations
  • Toothing technique.

  • Understanding of how to select and maintain tools including gauge, plumb line, and level and how to use them safely and effectively

  • Simple foundations
  • Toothing technique.
  • More advanced bricklaying techniques such as arches and patterns

This course will provide you with an enhanced introduction to working in the construction industry with core units on health and safety and communication within construction trades followed by hands on practical training in building block, brick and cavity walls. It is ideal for beginners to bricklaying and those that have some DIY experience and wish to develop their skills further. It is also ideal for multitrade skills people including landscape gardeners and those who may need to work with brickwork and build brick walls.

You can complete the level one certificate and practice your trowel skills in the third and fourth weeks, picking up speed and moving towards the skills necessary to start working on a construction site.

You will cover:

  • Knowledge of bricks and blocks (and mixes, mortar and bonds) and how to lay them properly, including building a variety of low walls, with 90 degree corners and two brick pillars
  • Understanding of how to select and maintain tools including gauge, plumb line, and level and how to use them safely and effectively
  • Health and Safety issues
  • Marking out - chalk lines and mortar lines
  • Simple foundations
  • Toothing technique.
  • More advanced bricklaying techniques such as arches and patterns
